Description: David Fanning, the music director of the National String Symphonia in Washington, D.C., asked me for a “show-off” piece for his orchestra. It sounds flashy, but is only of medium difficulty to play.
Description: A contemplation of love, with text by Alexander “Sandy” Shaw. Commissioned by the choir at Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Bethesda, Maryland.
Instrumentation: Oboe, French horn, bassoon, piano, SATB choir
Description: This is a light, call-and-response piece that introduces a young audience to the sections of the orchestra. Commissioned by the National Philharmonic at Strathmore Music Center.
Description: I have always been obsessed with flying cars—especially those from the science fiction future of the 1950s. In this whimsical piece, I imagined a little spaceship that runs out of fuel and must land on a strange planet for a refill. Soon, it continues on its merry way.
